Not Just News
Rev Libby Wang
In our global village, news spreads fast. We are saddened and shocked by disasters far away but the sentiments easily get buried among other incoming messages and reports. Our attention to such news – be it about killings and persecutions of Christians in the Muslim world – is only momentary. But if the report is about the people you know and love, that will not just be news. Today, what happen to Afghanistan as shared by a couple I know lingers on my mind. Here is what they wrote last year:
Jan 27: Large-scale terrorist attacks in the embassy area in the capital killed at least 95 people… Please pray for those struggling to hold on for dear life. Yesterday evening, a suicide raid in our neighborhood left 14 dead. Sorry for all the bad news. But the scenes are too vivid for us. Hope you will pray…
April 30: More attacks leaving some 40 dead… A major explosion in late May killed nearly 100 people. The location was en route from our home to the downtown area which we always pass by…
Massacre in East Afghanistan: 160 dead. Demonstrators were bombed. So were two girl schools. Can't imagine the ruthlessness…
My recent prayers: There have been more than 1,300 civilian deaths in the first half of the year… God, have mercy on more than 30 million Afghans, who are confused and desperate. May they know the Lord, be healed and be saved. May your servants bravely preach the truth.
For this couple, the environment is so dangerous and the gospel so difficult to preach. Why then do they stay on? The fact is that Muslims have had a chance to hear the gospel and read the Bible through this couple. So, there is no need to worry. I only need to pray for them so they have strength to break the fortress in front of them.
Muslims are the largest group of unreached people in the world. They are also the most anti-Christ. I came to know more about them and pray for them after I joined NPAC. In the Mission Conference of 2009, I became more familiar with the situation in Indonesia and the Arabian Peninsula, after which I joined Prayer Tower. In 2010, I started to use the booklet 30 Days of Prayer for the Muslim World during Ramadan. I also read the book Torch for Islam, an impactful account of George Harris’ 35 years of mission work in Northwest China since 1916. From then on, some brothers and sisters and I visited some of the places mentioned in the book. We got to know some of God's servants who share George Harris’ heart and burden as well as the communities they serve. That gave me a better understanding of their letters and helped me know how to lift them up in prayers continually.
The other day, I read an article entitled "From 100,000 to 3 Million – How Iran Secured the Fastest Growth in Christian Population." It says that after 40 years of Muslim rule, more and more Iranians despair over Islam. People seek a new answer – one that their state religion cannot provide. There is no way that I can verify the statistics in the article but one thing is for sure: Muslims are victims of Islam. Who can save them from the bondage of Islam?
The work of the gospel is still under severe persecution in Iran but the church there is growing amidst all the difficulties. Does that speak to you in any way?
