Pastor's Sharing
A Planned and Spirit-guided Life
Rev Sylvia Kwok

Hong Kong people are famous for their capability and efficiency. In many large firms, organizations and churches, they demonstrate first-rate planning and management skills. It is not difficult to see that large-scale church meetings and activities are arranged and conducted by pastors and believers in an orderly manner.

It is important to have planning and management in ministry. Theological seminaries run church management courses to train pastors on how to set directions and goals for the church, conduct evaluation after implementing the plans and make improvements in future. NPAC has its five-year plans to guide the growth of the congregation. In the New Testament, the Apostle Paul talks about his missionary plan in Romans 15:23. He intended to visit the churches in Rome and Spain and preach the gospel there. But when serving the Lord, we always need to leave room for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. In Acts 16:6-16, Paul was originally planning to go to Asia but was kept by the Spirit from preaching the word there. During the night, Paul had a vision of a man of Macedonia. He then obeyed the Holy Spirit and went to preach in Europe instead. In Acts 8:26-40, Philip was going to preach in Samaria, but an angel of the Lord directed him to go south to the desert road. In the end, Philip led the Ethiopian eunuch to God.

In NPAC's Indonesian ministry, we also witnessed the miraculous guidance of the Spirit. At the airport after a meeting in Kupang, Indonesia, I came across a Christian and Missionary Alliance pastor from Bali who challenged us to support the pioneering work among the unreached people in North-eastern Bali. I felt the Spirit's guidance. After some liaison and communication, NPAC started subsidizing a pioneer pastor in 2015. From 2016, we send a short-term mission team to offer medical help and to serve the children there on a yearly basis. The work is now in the fourth year and bearing fruit. This year, we see new guidance from the Spirit. Sumatra in Indonesia is at the heart of the Muslim population. But under the miraculous arrangement of God, we are in touch with a local retired Chinese who is a member of the C&MA. He has started to reach out to the Muslim people there and welcomes our short-term mission teams to help lead people to God.

The Holy Spirit is also at work at NPAC, imparting visions of mission and calling on believers to follow. Between 2011 and 2019, the NPAC Family has sent out 32 missionaries to serve the unreached peoples for at least one year. At present, more than 10 believers are also seriously exploring full-time missionary work or are equipping themselves for the mission field. With the Holy Spirit at work in their hearts, can we not assist? Therefore, we are doing our best to groom them.

The church needs plans. It needs to be forward-looking. At the same time, it needs to pay attention to the guidance of the Spirit and change plans accordingly. In a turbulent social environment, many people in Hong Kong including Christians are contemplating emigration. Whether figuring out your next step in life or planning to leave, have you first sought the guidance of the Holy Spirit and paid attention to His work? In a planned and Spirit-guided life, we may not be able to control everything but we can always work with God and experience Him and His wondrous deeds.
