Pastor's Sharing
The Light of Life

Rev Ng Ming-Yee

Jesus says: You are the light of the world.

This time last year, I was sick and hospitalized for treatment. The hospital stay made me experience the ordeal from illnesses! During the beginning of my stay, there was a young patient opposite me awaiting surgery on abnormal blood vessels in her brain. She could not move her limbs and half of her body freely and she was much depressed. Another lady opposite me completed her surgery more than a month ago but was still unconscious. Still another patient was a food shop owner. She was very weak…. Every morning, staff came in to refill drinking water. One of them was particularly caring – she would pay attention to the condition of the patients and bring us words of encouragement. She was like the morning sunshine. She brought warmth. During the pandemic when hospital visits by relatives and friends were not allowed, her care for the patients was precious.

I was reminded by the Spirit to go to the bedside of the young patient to care for her and pray for her. She told me her surgery was scheduled for the next day. I therefore prayed for her and asked God to watch over her! That was how I started my ministry of prayer every morning. (Later in a rehabilitation hospital, I met this young lady again. I also knew another sister there. God blessed us with a spiritual fellowship. We encouraged each other and we started to pray every evening, inviting patients nearby to pray for everybody in the ward.) The Spirit of God was with us. He loves and keeps those who trust in Him. He also cares for those whose faith is not yet in Him.

On the day I packed up to go home (before returning to the hospital for a surgery later), I heard a voice outside the changing room: "You'll recover. Jesus loves you!" I said thank you again and again. The voice came back: "Why thank me?" When I went out of the room to see who it was, I saw the back of the staff who refilled water in the morning. I was amazed how she appeared at that moment and left in an instant. What is more amazing is she blessed me that way.

The next time I saw her was after my first surgery. My condition then was not good. I was weak and tired, but I managed to say hello and thanked her again. She said there was no need to thank her and that she was only saying what was on her heart. I later learned that she met a chaplain and she was greatly moved by the chaplain's ministry in the hospital wards. The chaplain shared the gospel with her and she gave her life to Jesus. Because of the pandemic later on, even the chaplain could not enter the wards. But God moved this new believer to convey His love and hope! Thank and praise the Lord!

We are the light of the world!

"You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven." (Matthew 5:14-16)
