Pastor's Sharing
A Few Things about Muslim Evangelism: Does Any Concern You?

Rev Libby Wang

This year on May 13, the day of the Islamic Eid al-Fitr (Feast of Breaking the Fast), the Muslim Research Group under the Division of Inter-cultural Studies (ICS) of the Alliance Bible Seminary held a seminar entitled "Caring about Muslim Neighbors in Hong Kong." During the seminar, the group released findings of its study along with related literature in the form of a free e-book/handbook. The ICS has held an Asia missions conference in May 2017. Thereafter, it formed three research groups based on the mission needs of Hong Kong. One of these is the Muslim Research Group, which I joined in order to care for Muslims together with other companions.

After the group was formed and had met various times, it chose the theme "Muslims@Influence in Hong Kong Tertiary Institutions" in May 2019 and invited tertiary students in Hong Kong to fill out a Google form. Then the social events and Covid-19 broke out. The work was not completed until this year. The group spent three years on the study with the hope of mobilizing Chinese churches in Hong Kong to understand the local Muslim situation, to care and pray for them and take appropriate actions. Under the trend of global restrictions on evangelism, caring for the needs of local Muslims is both direct and effective.

At the May 13 seminar, a pastor speaker shared that one day many years ago when he was playing a ball game at a nearby court with youths of his church, he saw a number of Muslims. He thought to himself: Is it at all possible for me to approach and care for them? Since then, they started to give tutorials to the South-Asian students in the schools near their church and build relationships with their families. They also invited the students and their families to play together… Many years ago, young people of the NPAC family had participated in similar ministries through various institutions. We were also a partner for the setting up of Indonesia Faith Church. Recently, we also collaborate with Faith Indonesia Church to organize the "Health and Joy Get-together@Living Stone." We hope more brothers and sisters will join in caring for Indonesian helpers.

We have increased understanding about over 20 million Muslims on the Mainland through the mission conferences and activities in 2010, 2015 and various subsequent visits these few years. Ever since October 2015, "The Lord loves Muslims" prayer meeting is held once a month after the Thursday prayer meeting. We continually pray for the mainland Muslim population, particularly the people we know who are serving, their teams and those they serve. We listen and share, and it is like experiencing God's wondrous, faithful and mighty works among them together, looking unto God and awaiting His blessings!

The speakers of the "Ministry in the Gap" fellowship program by the Missions Department were stranded in Hong Kong due to the pandemic. Nevertheless, they did not stop serving. They provided online counseling, care and training to those they have built up relationships with, thereby allowing the role and capacity of their co-workers in the field to be strengthened.

There are 1.6 billion Muslims across the world. Some 300,000 of them are in Hong Kong. As the title of one article says, you are sure to find a Muslim near you. Thinking about the few things about Muslim evangelism discussed above, does any of them concern you?
