Pastor's Sharing
Lent: Draw Ever Nearer to the Heart of God

Rev Ming-Yee Ng

These days, life has become very different. We don’t need to slow down deliberately and we no longer move about freely like we used to. When meeting needs of all kinds, we have to adapt to various new restrictions. We are faced with a lot more chaos and difficulties and our hearts cannot have peace. With Lent just round the corner, perhaps we need to draw near to the Lord, be still in Him, listen to Him speak to us, and seek His heart. Jesus has promised: “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

The coming Wednesday (Mar 2) is the first day of Lent. During the Wednesday morning prayers in the past, pastoral staff have followed the church tradition to administer ashes from burnt palm branches to participating brothers and sisters as a symbol of penitence (Nehemiah 9:1). The process of coming forward to receive ashes is a solemn one. We need to humble ourselves, reflect before the Lord and seek His mercy. Meanwhile, the act also brings relief and satisfaction to our hearts because the deeper the reflection, the more we can experience the Lord’s love and the depth of His grace that grants us forgiveness so that we can draw near to God with a pure heart and clean hands, and to prepare for and commemorate the Lord’s resurrection. Wearing ashes is a symbol of repentance. In such a time as this, would this be expressed in a different way?

The 40 days of Lent remind us of Jesus’ 40 days of fasting and prayer in the wilderness and His victory over the devil’s temptation after. Jesus went to the wilderness to fast and pray to draw near to God single-mindedly. He knew that He must stay close to the Father in taking the path of the cross. Lent is a good opportunity to learn from Jesus’ life example. May we follow the Holy Spirit’s leading to fast or lay aside some favorite things to help us focus on praying and drawing near to God, to let Him open our spiritual eyes and renew our vision so that we can see His work. He indeed is the only One we can depend on.

The Lord’s sacrificial love is not just for “me” but for all who belong to Him and even those who do not yet know Him. Perhaps when we are willing to get close to Jesus’ heart, we will be able to see that the people He cares about are right around us. This Lent season, may we better learn how to imitate Christ and to serve the needy around us with acts of humility and self-sacrifice.

“In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death—even death on a cross!” (Philippians 2:5-8).
