Pastor's Sharing
Online Pastoring – You Can Also Play A Part

Rev Raymond Chan

During the pandemic, many churches realize the necessity for "online pastoring." This new mode of pastoring is not exclusive for pastors. Under the new normal, every believer can take on an active role in this. The following are three ways to put this into practice:

Worship

Online worship is nothing new today but our mentality of participation is key. As a believer, I would choose to attend at the time scheduled by the church, just like attending onsite worship services on time. You may ask, is it not the same to attend later? The content is the same after all. It is true that the content is the same but the mentality of participation is very different. Online worship is not the same as other online programs. The latter is something you can "watch" according to your personal interest. The former, however, is a real-time corporate act. Even if I may be alone in front of the monitor, I know that in different parts of the city, there are brothers and sisters singing praises with me, learning the word of God, and saying "Amen" together. This is a new expression of "the communion of saints" in the digital age.

Fellowships and Small Groups

Brothers and sisters in fellowships and small groups which meet online should now have mastered the necessary skills. You could perhaps think about how to make better use of this special space to bring about some different fellowship experience for members. Online fellowship is really a "home visit" without going out. Why not take this opportunity to know more about other fellowship members' life? They can actually share with each other special decorations of their home and things of special significance to them. If you have pets at home, they will certainly be very popular. I also suggest that you could invite your family members to show up before the camera to let them know your fellowship members. This could well be the beginning of opportunities to share the gospel. I think if we give more thoughts to planning fellowship meetings, we will have surprising rewards.

Mutual Pastoring

Talking about pastoring, it is easy for us to think of the one-directional pastors-to-congregation pastoring. But the Bible lets us know that especially in the early church, pastoring is multi-directional. That is to say, believers also minister to one another. Believers can inject faith-based positivity online, sharing what you have learnt from your devotionals or things you are grateful for so that the atmosphere in the online world is more spiritual. The Internet is a good tool to "search for people." You could try to look for fellowship members whom you have lost touch with before to let them know that the doors of the fellowship are still open. Brothers and sisters overseas also need our care. The people the pastoral team can reach is limited but if believers can connect with those in their own networks, fellowship life can go deeper and farther.

One day, the pandemic will be over. Will "online pastoring" be of any value then? I believe that "online pastoring" and traditional onsite pastoring are not a zero-sum game in which the advantage of one side is necessarily the loss of the other. Both modes of pastoring have their strengths and restrictions. Well deployed, they can complement each other to help the church continue to be good witnesses in the new digitized era.
