Pastor's Sharing

Special-needs Children@Family Gospel Camp@Me!

Rev. Calvin Yuen

The gospel is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes (Romans 1:16). At the same time, it is through God’s work and the conviction of the Holy Spirit that people can believe in God (John 16:13) – even children with special needs, who, despite their physical or intellectual disabilities, can confess Jesus as Lord and Christ.

The “Special-needs Children Family Gospel Camp,” held every August, is a three-day, two-night camp that not only strengthens the faith of parents but also shares the gospel with special-needs children and their parents who do not yet believe, helping them rely on the Lord to face life’s various challenges.

Special-needs children often find it difficult to express themselves or communicate effectively due to physical or intellectual limitations. For volunteers entering this community to share the gospel, it resembles cross-cultural missions in a foreign land!

Passing on the Torch of the Gospel

Thank God for allowing the NPAC family to participate in and witness His grace and mighty works. As early as 2010, our Disability Ministry visited Taiwan to join the Special-needs Children Gospel Camp organized by Taichung Rung Chung Christian Church During the “Love‧Walking Together” workshop held in March 2013, with the help of the Taiwan gospel camp team, we received training and shared this vision with pastors and brothers and sisters from eleven churches.

The following year, God led Yuen Kei Alliance Church to organize the first Special-needs Children Family Gospel Camp in Hong Kong. Subsequently, God raised up four churches to take turns to host the event. The NPAC family hosted the camp in 2015 and 2017, mobilizing 140 brothers and sisters from the entire church (including the English Ministry) to take part.

In 2017, God moved Rev. Issac Man (萬得康牧師) and parents of special-needs children to establish the non-profit organization “Special Needs Evangelical Ministry Limited,” which promotes the vision of disability inclusion. From the fifth year onward, this organization took over organizing the gospel camp, recruiting participants from churches across Hong Kong. This year marks the 11th camp. It has been renamed the “Hong Kong Special-needs Children Family Gospel Camp” to express all the more clearly the ministry’s direction.

God’s Mighty Power and Abundant Blessings

The 2017 camp experienced the severe impact of Super Typhoon Hato, which even damaged the venue’s air conditioning. The COVID-19 pandemic followed in 2021-2022. Yet, God protected the special-needs children, parents, and volunteers and they were safe in the camp. Under His leading, the camp also concluded smoothly, clearly demonstrating that nothing is impossible with Him.

Sharing the gospel with parents of special-needs children brings hope to entire families, helping parents see their children through the Heavenly Father’s eyes. Some parents have even committed to becoming group leaders, and they serve families who share similar experiences.

The love of Christ illuminates the lives of special-needs children (including those with autism or speech difficulties). In the past, many special-needs children have professed their faith and committed to following the Lord Jesus through the Holy Spirit’s guidance and the volunteers’ support!

One special-needs child later returned as an adult volunteer responsible for guarding the back door to prevent younger children from running out. He shared, “When I was younger, I also ran toward the door, so I understand them.” There are many more stories about brothers and sisters who have similarly experienced renewal and transformation in the Lord…

Do you hope to witness God’s mighty deeds and experience the power of the gospel? Are you willing to join this gospel camp and experience “cross-cultural missions” firsthand? May God inspire you to respond and serve together!
